Build Your First Application with Blazor

The arrival of WebAssembly begins a new era for .NET web developers, allowing client-side applications written in C# to run directly in the browser. Blazor is a new client-side UI platform from the ASP.NET Core team, offering a productive and powerful way to construct large-scale applications with a modern component-based architecture. It integrates with the wider .NET ecosystem to enable truly full-stack client+server development on a single language and runtime, based on modern standards, and able to run in any browser (including mobiles). This workshop will quickly take you from getting started with Blazor basics, right through to building sophisticated UIs using more advanced framework features. We’ll explore not only the capabilities of Blazor and WebAssembly today, but also the longer-term vision for the future of web apps on .NET.

Jeff Fritz is a principal program manager in Microsoft's Developer Division on the .NET Community Team where he leads development of live video and online content. Astro for Rank Beginners

The workshop will assume you have basic knowledge of web development, including HTML, basic CSS, GitHub, and Typescript.

Nick Hodges

Nick Hodges is a presenter and writer on technology and coding. A long-time Delphi developer, he has recently turned his attention to TypeScript and Angular. Nick has a BA in Classical Languages from Carleton College and an MS in Information Technology Management from the Naval Postgraduate School. In his career, he has been a busboy, a cook, a caddie, a telemarketer (for which he apologizes), an Office Manager, a high school teacher, a Naval Intelligence officer, a software developer, a product manager, and a software development manager. In addition, he is a former Delphi Product Manager and Delphi R&D Team Manager. He's a passionate Minnesota sports fan -- especially the Timberwolves -- as he grew up and went to college in the Land of 10,000 Lakes. He currently lives in West Chester, PA.

Asynchronous and Parallel Programming in C#

Asynchronous programming is a critical skill to take full advantage of today's multi-core systems. But async programming brings its own set of issues. In this workshop, we'll work through some of those issues and get comfortable using parts of the .NET Task Parallel Library (TPL).

We'll start by calling asynchronous methods using the Task Asynchronous Pattern (TAP), including how to handle exceptions and cancellation. With this in hand, we'll look at creating our own asynchronous methods and methods that use asynchronous libraries. Along the way, we'll see how to avoid deadlocks, how to isolate our code for easier async, and why it's important to stay away from "async void".

In addition, we'll look at some patterns for running code in parallel, including using Parallel.ForEachAsync, channels, and other techniques. We'll see pros and cons so that we can use the right pattern for a particular problem.

Throughout the day, we'll go hands-on with lab exercises to put these skills into practice.

Objectives:

• Use asynchronous methods with Task and await
• Create asynchronous methods and libraries
• Avoid deadlocks and other pitfalls
• Understand different parallel programming techniques

Pre-Requisites:

Basic understanding of C# and object-oriented programming (classes, inheritance, methods, and properties). No prior experience with asynchronous programming is necessary; we'll take care of that as we go.

Jeremy helps developers by sharing his own struggles, mostly in technology, but also with being more social as an introvert, understanding potential for learning, and playing banjo. He has worked as a corporate developer, as a Chief Improvement Officer at a startup, and as a contract developer. He spends most of his time in C# and has recently ventured into Go (golang) and Rust (rust-lang) to explore some of his favorite topics: interfaces, delegates, concurrency, and parallel programming.

Accessibility Testing with Screen Readers & More Workshop

Accessibility Testing is an interesting process involving a mixture of automated and manual testing methods with a variety of tools. You may have an Accessibility test plan together, but now you need the tools to put it to use.

In this half day workshop, we'll get into how we can use screen readers in mobile and desktop environments to identify how accessible content is. Additionally, we'll touch on a few other tools that can be used like browser extensions, bookmarklets, and desktop applications.

Public speaking and presentation workshop

As engineers, we're often presented with opportunities to share our work with others in a range of settings, from knowledge-sharing sessions with other engineers, to presentations for cross-functional partners and stakeholders, to speaking at conferences, and everything in between.

Giving an effective presentation is an important skill, but it's one that's rarely taught with intention. In this workshop, we'll cover: how to choose an appropriate topic for the forum you have in mind, how to organize information effectively, how to tailor your content to your specific audience, how to capture the attention of your attendees, and how to prepare in a way that will reduce your anxiety and set you up for success.

No advance preparation is needed, and you'll leave with everything you need to start preparing a presentation of your own.

I gained my Accessibility knowledge after a little over 3 years in the IT Department at the American Printing House for the Blind (APH) here in Louisville, KY. While there, I was always looking to provide accessible technology training, help implement more Accessible technology options, and learn everything I could to help others. Eventually, I moved on to more development-oriented roles, including a QA role with GoodMaps, an accessible indoor navigation app developer born out of APH. Now, I work as an Accessibility Engineer with CVS. I hope to continue to build my career on Accessibility while also spreading what I learn to as many people as possible.

Contain Your Enthusiam - A Full Day with Containers and Kubernetes

Establishing Good TDD Habits

Spend a day learning about container technology from the ground up. Starting with Windows and Docker Container Fundamentals, moving to Kubernetes Concepts, then Kubernetes tools for managing multi-cluster, multi-cloud environments.

While not a hands-on, attendees are encouraged to follow along. A prerequisites document will be send out ahead of time for laptop setup to ease those who wish to follow along.
